Install it on both computers.
JoyRemote goes on each computer you want to use or reach. Version 1.6.0. Free on your own network, for ever — there is nothing to buy to try it.
Windows
For 64-bit Windows. Run JoyRemote-Setup-1.6.0.exe and it
installs everything.
The installer is signed. Its checksum:

macOS
For Macs with Apple silicon. Download JoyRemote-1.6.0.dmg
and open it. Inside are two apps, JoyRemote and
JoyRemote Host; drag both to Applications, then open
JoyRemote.

The first time, allow JoyRemote under Screen Recording and Accessibility in System Settings › Privacy & Security, then reopen it.
Ubuntu and Fedora
For Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, and Fedora 44 or newer. Ubuntu has two
packages with the same JoyRemote inside; take the one for your release
(lsb_release -rs says which).
Ubuntu 26.04 or newer:
sudo apt install ./joyremote_1.6.0_amd64.deb
Ubuntu 24.04 to 25.10:
sudo apt install ./joyremote_1.6.0_ubuntu24.04_amd64.deb
Fedora 44 or newer:
sudo dnf install ./joyremote-1.6.0-1.fc44.x86_64.rpm
All three packages are signed

On Wayland, the first time somebody connects, a dialog asks to share the screen; accept it and it is remembered. To keep a computer reachable without opening JoyRemote on it:
systemctl --user enable --now joyremote-host.service
To open the firewall to your own network — Ubuntu, then Fedora:
sudo ufw allow from 192.168.0.0/16 to any app JoyRemote
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-rich-rule='rule family=ipv4 source address=192.168.0.0/16 service name=joyremote accept' && sudo firewall-cmd --reload
Other systems
Intel Macs, older Ubuntu and Fedora, and other Linux run JoyRemote from source. Write to info@joyremote.com for a hand with it.
Then what
- Install it on both computers and leave the one you want to reach switched on.
- On the same network, each finds the other by itself. Away from home, type the ten-digit number the other computer shows.
- Somebody at the far computer approves the connection, unless it remembers yours.
Removing it
Windows: Add or remove programs. Mac: drag both apps to the Bin. Ubuntu and Fedora:
sudo apt remove joyremote
sudo dnf remove joyremote
On Linux the folder ~/JoyRemote stays: it holds this
computer's identity, so a reinstall keeps the same number and approvals.
Delete it to erase them.
